Doulas – Special Support for Moms-to-Be
Doulas - Ancient Greek for 'a woman who serves' - support expectant moms throughout their pregnancy and during labor and childbirth, providing education, empowerment and encouragement. If this sounds like a luxury you cannot afford, The VCU School of Nursing Doulas may be your answer.
Our doulas are second-year nursing students who understand childbirth and how to comfort a woman in labor. They have worked in the hospital and have completed intensive doula training. Your doula can answer many of your questions, and help you work through your fears or concerns. Her goal is to be your advocate and help you experience a positive and safe birth.
Your doula will:
Help you create a birth plan
- Prepare you for childbirth
- Accompany you to 2 prenatal visits
- Provide physical and emotional support during labor
- Provide breastfeeding support
Our doulas provide their service free of charge to women who otherwise could not afford it, meeting a unique need of moms in our community.
To learn more about our doulas, email Susan L. Lindner or call 804-828-3375.
